Research Projects” implemented by Dr A V Bedekar as Principal Investigator in the Department of Chemistry, M. S. University of Baroda

Project 1:

Title : “Synthesis, Study and Applications of Novel Helical Molecules”
Funding Agency : Science and Engineering Research Council, Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi
Period : July 2007 to June 2010
Sanctioned Amount : Rs. 33.7 Lakh

Highlights:

A modified process to access ortho fused polyaromatic hydrocarbons has been developed. The method is then utilized to synthesize a series of [4]helicene, [6]helicene and [7]helicene. A number of novel helicene like bis-oxazines were also synthesized in diastereomerically pure form. Their properties such CD spectra and optical rotation was found to be in accordance with the expected typical helical compounds. Also synthesized were small helicene like molecules attached to naphthalenes, where the 1,8-peri interaction is explored.

Some molecules synthesized:

Project 2:

Title : “Axially Chiral Molecules: Synthesis, Characterization and Applications”
Funding Agency : Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi
Period : July 2010 to March 2014
Sanctioned Amount : Rs. 24.56 Lakh

Highlights:

The project deals with synthesis of novel atropisomeric molecules and the study their properties. Work has been carried out to prepare various derivatives of terphenyls, study their variable temperature dynamic NMR, attempts to separate isomers etc. In other part a number of novel atropisomeric naphthols have been prepared, methods developed to access them in optically pure form and to convert them to helical compounds.

Some molecules synthesized:

Project 3:

Title : “Synthesis and study of unusually shaped chiral molecules”
Funding Agency : University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi
Period : April 2013 to March 2016
Sanctioned Amount : Rs. 11.37 Lakh

Highlights:

The project has just started and it is planned to synthesized novel and unusually shaped chiral molecules, attempt to separate the isomers and study their properties/applications.

Project 4:

Title : “New helical molecules: Synthesis, study and applications”
Funding Agency : Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi
Period : June 2013 to May 2016
Sanctioned Amount : Rs. 41.78 Lakh

Highlights:

The project is about to start and it is planned to synthesized number of novel helical compounds, separate their isomers and study their special properties/applications.
